RBH Celebration and Information Day

Date published: 03 October 2009

Fun for all the family at the Rochdale Boroughwide Housing celebration and information day at Rochdale Town Hall - with opportunities to take part in workshops including silk flower arranging, DIY workshops and cooking demonstrations and making a music CD and face painting.

Jane Howard, Communications Manager for RBH said: “Despite the weather we have had a great turnout today, everybody seems to have a smile on their face and there is a real buzz about the whole day.”

Ms Howard added: “Today is a day for the tenants, they told us what they wanted, they made the plans and we helped to put on the event. It is a day for them to celebrate their achievements.”

As well as providing fun and new activities for the RBH tenants and lease holders, part of the day was to recognise those people in the area who have stood out in one way or another.

MP Paul Rowen presented the Communities First Awards in the Great Hall. He said: “Communities First is a package of incentives that aims to recognise, promote and reward good behaviour and the contributions made by tenants and groups to improve community spirit.”

Awards went to:

  • Ann Mackin – nominated by Susanne Hanson for working tirelessly to keep children of the streets and provide them with activities in a safe environment.
  • Joan Turner – nominated by Bev Pickston for her role in Brotherod TRA where she organises day trips, fun days and luncheon clubs aswel as fundraising for the community centre.
  • Sheila Acton – nominated by Rose Leech for all her selfless work in organising activities for tenants and residents of all ages and for her efforts in the opening of the Syke Community Base.
  • Linda O’Rourke – nominated by Carole Langley for her dedication and commitment in running a youth club in Meadway for children between 8-13 years old.
  • Alice Ward – nominated by Phil Renshaw for being an excellent example of the young people from Kirkholt by working on community projects with people of all ages.

Phil Woolas MP said: “I am delighted to have been asked to present the Good Neighbour award. These awards are a great opportunity for us to say thank you on behalf of the people who benefit from having great neighbours and for us to promote to everyone how easy it is to make a real positive different to your neighbours life.”

The award winner was Paul Sutcliffe from Kirkholt, Mr Sutcliffe was nominated by his neighbour Geoffrey Howarth for all his help in tidying up Mr Howarth’s overgrown garden, by taking over the heavy lifting and working in all weathers.

When asked about the day Rochdale MP Paul Rowen said: “This is a superb event, there is a lot going on and I have really enjoyed it. All those who have won an award truly deserve to win, they are the unsung heroes of our community.”
