Get involved in Memory Walk

Date published: 16 August 2010

The Rochdale Alzheimer’s Society is urging people to get involved with this years Memory Walk in the hope it will help to raise funds for a series of Dementia Cafés to be held in Rochdale.

This year’s Greater Manchester Memory Walk hopes to attract 500 walkers. There will be a gentle one mile walk and a more challenging seven mile route if you want a greater challenge.

Tania Taylor from Rochdale’s Alzheimer’s Society based at Partnership House, Sparrow Hill said: “I am hoping to organise 6 dementia cafes for people in Rochdale because there is nothing for them at the moment. And I hope we can raise some of the funds through the Memory Walk.

“The cafes will be an informal place for people to have a chance to get peer support and listen to guest speakers.

“I am hoping to get them up and running as soon as possible although there is no time line at the moment.”

Ms Taylor added: “It is a really fun day out, there are lots of stalls and fun for all the family.”

Well known faces walking at the event include Chris Gascoyne (aka Peter Barlow from Coronation Street). Staff members and volunteers from Alzheimer’s Society will also be supporting the Memory Walk, which is being sponsored by healthcare provider Simplyhealth.

A ‘Memory Wall’ at the event will give the walkers the opportunity to write down their personal memories - the reasons why they are walking or who they are walking for.

The walk takes place on Sunday 19 September at 10.00am from the Orangery at Heaton Park.
