Date published: 03 September 2010

Rochdale’s most famous former MP, Sir Cyril Smith, has passed away peacefully this morning (Friday 3 September 2010), aged 82.

Sir Cyril had been ill for many months and passed away in his sleep at Hurstead Nursing Home, Rochdale.

Sir Cyril Smith served as Rochdale’s Liberal MP from 1972 until retiring in 1992 after winning a famous by-election victory to become only the seventh Liberal MP at the time, and the only one with an urban seat. He was often described as having a larger than life personality due to his huge stature and was one of Britain’s most recognisable MPs during the 1970s and 80s.

Sir Cyril’s relentless hard work for Rochdale and support for his constituents was recognised in 1988 when he was knighted.

His brother, Norman Smith M.B.E, said: “Cyril passed away peacefully this morning with members of his family around him. I couldn’t have asked for a better brother.”

Former Lib Dem MP Paul Rowen called him "an amazing ambassador for our town".’

He said: “I have known Sir Cyril since his first election victory in 1972. He has been a truly amazing ambassador for our town and a true inspiration to me personally.

"During my years as Rochdale MP he was a great source of advice and help and he remained active within the party up until only a few months ago due to his illness.

"He will be sadly missed by thousands of people, not only in Rochdale, but across the country.

"He was a towering figure for our party and led us through difficult times.”

Sir Cyril's funeral will take place on Monday 13 September with more details to follow.
