Concert to remember Sir Cyril

Date published: 16 September 2011

A special concert in memory of Sir Cyril Smith has been held at the Rochdale Town Hall.

The audience, which included relatives of Sir Cyril, were treated to a spectacular evening of entertainment.

The music was provided courtesy of the Rochdale Youth Orchestra with Musical Director Sue Verity, Rochdale Schools Concert Orchestra with Musical Director Ian Nelson, Rochdale Borough Wind Band with Musical Director Richard Charles and Rochdale Youth Orchestra Jazz Ensemble led by Chris Jolly.

The concert was sponsored by Rochdale Childer, which was founded by Sir Cyril, from monies donated following his death. Some of the more generous donations will go to the performers as a continuation of his support of youth music.

The event was organised by Maureen Cooper MBE, President of the Rochdale Childer.

Musical Director, Sue Verity, said: “The concert went really well and the
audience thoroughly enjoyed it.

“We had a very good turn out,” she added, “It was super concert.”
