Poppy row ‘disgrace’ - MEP
Date published: 09 November 2011
MEP Paul Nuttall has described the Fifa ban on England's footballers wearing a poppy on their shirts as a disgrace.
"This ridiculous decision must be reversed immediately. It is only fit and proper that our lads should proudly wear a poppy on their shirts this weekend," he said.
"It is nonsense to cite fears about German hostility to this mark of respect. Even the German Football Federation have come out backing poppy wearing," said Mr Nuttall, UKIP Euro-MP.
"I think it is a disgrace that our footballers should be prevented from showing their respect for those who have laid down their lives for us and those willing to do so.
"Wearing a poppy is a matter of national pride and at least I hope this row will have served to remind everyone to wear one ahead of this weekend's Remembrance Sunday."
