Date published: 16 September 2012

A woman was killed when the car she was travelling in collided with another being driven in the wrong direction on the M62 in Rochdale.

Rachel Caine, 20, from Leeds, died and three others were hurt when their car crashed into a Renault between junctions 21 and 22 near Milnrow.

The driver of the Renault, a 31-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police said he also failed a roadside breath test.

The motorway was closed in both directions following the crash at 03:00am with two lanes of the westbound side opening at about 06:00am.

Diversions were in place via the A672 and A640 on the eastbound side while crash investigators assessed the scene.

Sgt Lee Westhead said: "A young woman has tragically died in what appears to have been a totally avoidable collision.

"A team of specialist officers are now investigating and we are providing support to the victim's family.

"My thoughts are with the victim's family at this terrible time."
