Remembrance Sunday: Rochdale pays its respects

Date published: 11 November 2012

Remembrance Sunday services and parades have taken place across the borough of Rochdale today (Sunday 11 November 2012) honouring those who have died whilst fighting for their country.

The Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor James Gartside, headed a service of Remembrance at the Rochdale Cenotaph this morning.

The remembrance parade began at Mere Street, and the procession marched along Drake Street, Manchester Road and The Esplanade to the Cenotaph.

Hundreds of people lined the streets to watch the parade and thousands were gathered at the Cenotaph.

The Last Post was sounded as the Town Hall clock struck 11.00am; a two minute silence followed.

The Mayor said: “Of all the events during my year in office none is more important or moving than the Remembrance Service.

“The current conflict in Afghanistan is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices our armed forces continue to make in order to preserve our freedom and I hope as many people as possible will join us for the ceremony.”
