Appeal for information after pair falsely claim to be social workers

Police are appealing for information after a man and a woman falsely claimed they were social workers in Rochdale.

The first incident happened on Friday 9 November 2012 between 6.00pm and 7.00pm. A woman called at a house on Queensway, Castleton claiming she was a social worker and she had received reports of neglect.

She said she was there to take away her children and would start legal proceedings.

The victim challenged the woman and she eventually left.

She is described as being white , 5`5" tall, medium to large build, early twenties, light brown shoulder length hair, with faded blonde streaks. She spoke very fast with a Rochdale accent and had a nervous disposition.

At around 8.00pm the same day, a man knocked on the door of a home on Asby Close, Middleton, claiming he was from social services and said he was there to check the house. He walked upstairs and attempted to walk into the bedroom but the victim refused and the man left, getting into a dark coloured car that was being driven by a woman. They drove off towards Searness Road.

The man is described as being white, with a round face, fair skin and wearing a dark grey suit with black shoes.

Detective Constable Ben Harris from Rochdale CID said: “We are investigating the possibility that these incidents may be linked. During the first visit, the female has shown a fairly in depth knowledge of social worker procedures and legal matters however, we know that they have no affiliation to social services whatsoever.

“I would ask members of the community to remain vigilant and if anyone believes they have been approached by these people or have heard of similar incidents taking place to phone police straight away.

“This is also a timely reminder for people to ensure they always ask for ID if they are unsure of who is calling at their door. If you are not satisfied with the identification, phone the organisation they claim to be from and see if they are registered there. However, if you are still unsure, you can ask for them to come back when you have a friend or trusted neighbour with you. A genuine caller will always be happy to do this.”
