Long wait for Christmas and New Year rubbish collection?

Date published: 13 December 2012

There is concern about the arrangements for the collection of household waste over the Christmas period.

Rochdale Online has been contacted by a Milkstone and Deeplish resident, who has asked not to be named, who said: "I am not due to have my non-recyclables emptied again for a month!"

She told us: “Yesterday, I had a leaflet from the council advising of refuse collections over Christmas and New Year.

"My household refuse was collected this morning (Thursday 13 December) and would normally due to be collected again on Thursday 27 December.

"There were times not that long ago when if Christmas and New Year holidays interrupted collections there would be one on the Saturday. However, according to the leaflet there will be no collections the week commencing 24 December and the next due date for collection will be 10 January. So much for fortnightly collections.

“Now correct me if I am wrong but I wasn’t aware that the 27 and 28 December this year are bank holidays. Everyone I’ve spoken to is back in work or has taken them as annual leave. So why is the Council not working?

“My concern is that household refuse bins will not be emptied during a busy period.

"The leaflet does say that rubbish can be taken to the council tip, but I don’t have a car and what about the elderly and infirm?

“Also, what about those people who have carers coming into them? I know that when my mum had carers coming in to see to her personal needs my bin was always overflowing. There is clearly a hygiene and public health issue here.”

Rochdale Online understand that the Recycling Site on Chichester Street is open all over the festive period apart from Christmas Day and New Years Day but as our informant indicates, this service is not available to all.

The information on the council website regarding bin-collection schedules appears to contradict the leaflet.

We understand that Councillor Dale Mulgrew has written to council officers asking for clarification.

We would have contacted the council for a response but they are refusing to respond to enquiries from Rochdale Online.
