Alcohol related hospital admissions fall

Date published: 04 July 2013

Latest figures show that alcohol-related hospital admissions are falling across Rochdale borough.

The rate of admissions between January and December 2012, the most recent data available, was 2,471 per 100,000 population, a 9.6 per cent decrease on the previous year.

The fall is the biggest across Greater Manchester, and in many areas, admissions continue to rise.

Michelle Loughlin, Consultant in Public Health, said: “Often, people with alcohol problems can end up in hospital as a result of wider social problems such as problems with debt, housing or a mental health issue. By supporting this group of people with those wider social problems, we have seen that we can reduce their chances of ending up back in hospital time and time again.”

The NHS recommends that men should not drink more than 3-4 units a day while women should stick to no more than 2-3 units. A 175ml glass of wine is equivalent to around two units while a pint of beer or cider is 2.8 units. Anyone who has had a heavy drinking session, should avoid alcohol for 48 hours.
