JD Sports criticised further

Date published: 22 July 2013

JD Sports Warehouse on Kingsway Business Park is under fire for the cost of uniforms following criticism about employment length, shift pattern and job security.

One former employee said: “I had to pay £23 uniform costing for three days work. To add to this, we have been told, 'employees have to pay for personal protective equipment, even though they shouldn’t.'"

The guidance on health and safety equipment states that all employers are responsible for providing, replacing and paying for the equipment.

A spokesman for JD Sports said: “We intend to carry out a review of this arrangement.”

The uniform issue comes days after JD Sports and their recruitment agents, Assist, were criticised by former employees.

One employee told us: “Everyone I know seems to have come from Assist. I don’t know anyone to be employed directly by JD. The company is pretty much run by Assist.”

They added: “You’re always warned about your job.”

The Warehouse, which supplies stock to JD stores across the country, employs around 550 staff members and the quick turn around of staff hasn’t gone unnoticed: “Some team leaders are under lots of stress so they step down and managers are known for giving people the sack easily for little things like leaning” said one employee.

The job offers minimum wage at £6.19 an hour with employees working up to twelve hour days.
