Friends raise over £1,000 for Cancer Research

Date published: 03 February 2014

A group of family and friends from Rochdale have raised over £1,000 for Cancer Research by taking part in this years Dryathlon.

The group which is made up of Andrew Oldfield, Charlene Grace, Josephine Fennelly, Karl Wild, Peter Whitehead, Evelyn Smith-Allen and Jordan Senior all took part in the fundraising event which lasted the whole of January.

Andrew Oldfield said: “We have all previously done other things to help raise money for cancer research, but this is our first time as a team.”

The group has so far risen over £1,000 for the charity with donations still coming in.

The Dryathlon is a fundraising event held every January for the cancer charity. Participants are asked to give up alcohol for the whole of January as a way of raising money for Cancer Research.

Andrew said: “We wanted to do it to raise the money for Cancer Research; we have all had people affected by cancer, some who are no longer with us so we wanted to do it for them really.”

The groups challenge came to an end on Saturday 31 January and Andrew commented on how hard the challenge really was.

“People have said it is not hard to stop drinking but it is done as more of a social thing for us, so in that aspect it is hard. It is a lot harder to pick up a coke rather than a beer,” said Andrew.

The group is now planning on further fundraising events for Cancer Research and are hoping to take part in a sky dive in July.
