Rochdale's asbestos legacy featured in new science publication

Date published: 19 March 2014

A new international science publication called Mosaic has just published an in depth investigation into asbestos. It features many of the issues published by Rochdale Online in many articles over the past 10 years - in particular the knowledge and cover-up of the health hazards of asbestos - cancer in particular.

There is also mention of Rochdale's Nellie Kershaw, the first person to be diagnosed with asbestosis after her early death in 1924.

The international asbestos memorial (the first of its type) in the Memorial Gardens opposite Rochdale Town Hall is also mentioned.

After 10 years of research and campaigning this is again a vindication of the issues the Save Spodden Valley campaign group has been raising.

A Save Spodden Valley spokesmand said: "History must not be allowed to repeat itself in the Spodden Valley. Around the world, the former TBA site is recognised as a place of international importance both for the size and duration of its toxic legacy - and for the poignancy of the lives, in Rochdale and beyond, affected by this killer dust by decisions and lies driven by shameless greed."
