Crime Prevention - Pedal Cycle Theft

Rochdale North officers have seen an increase in the theft of pedal cycles especially in the Town Centre. Please follow the advice below to help improve your bikes security.

Choosing a lock:

It is essential that you have a good quality lock for your bike.

You should look for a lock with a ‘Sold Secure’ rating of Bronze, Silver or Gold. Gold rated means that it has been tested against attack and offers the highest level of security.

If you can, use two locks of different types to deter thieves.

Where to park your bike:

  • Plan ahead and check out the places you need to leave your bike.
  • Look for secure cycle parking that is bolted securely or fixed into the ground.
  • Parking that only allows your front wheel to be locked should be avoided as thieves can remove your front wheel and make off with the rest of your bike.
  • When locking your bike in a shed/garage use an anchor point which either bolts directly to the floor/wall or can be installed into concrete.
  • If you keep your bike in a shed/garage invest in an alarm.

Register your bike:

  • We recommend that you register your bike on www.immobilise.com.
  • Immobilise is a free property registration database, it is used by GMP to reunite stolen goods to their owners.
  • If you have any information on who might be stealing or handling stolen bikes then please contact the Police on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
