Young people urged to check out Safe4Spring website

Date published: 18 April 2014

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is encouraging young people to check out the Safe4Spring website over Easter.

The website lists a selection of fun activities that are happening across all boroughs, and gives those aged 6-16 the chance to win an iPad if they enter a competition before Friday 30 May.

The site also gives valuable advice on how to stay safe when out in the countryside, or near open water.

Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan said: “This is a really useful site for young people, as boredom can sometimes set in over the holiday period, and a lot of the activities on offer will hopefully spark their interest.

“We know the vast majority of youngsters are no trouble at all, and we want them to enjoy the Easter break, but I need to remind them that antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated, and we will work closely with councils to prevent it from happening.”

Police will respond quickly to any incidents of anti social behaviour or neighbour disputes over Easter.

Increased patrols are running in hotspot areas to help prevent large groups of young people gathering and causing disruption, and officers will pass on the details of those behaving antisocially to councils’ neighbourhood teams.

They will also seize illegally purchased alcohol, work with trading standards to target licensed premises selling to under 18s, and prosecute adults who buy drink for young people.

In relation to neighbour disputes, which tend to increase during school holidays, police are urging residents to call 101 before things escalate and get out of hand. Where appropriate, officers will liaise with landlords and housing associations to see if further action needs to be taken.

For non-emergency calls or to report a crime call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Use 999 only in emergencies where there is a threat to life or property or a crime in progress.
