Image released following burglary of 83-year-old woman's flat in Heywood

Date published: 26 June 2014

A man stole cash from an elderly resident at her flat in Heywood.

Around 5.25pm on Saturday 14 June 2014, a man managed to get into a block of flats on Todd Street in Heywood through the communal entrance as some visitors were leaving.

He went into one of the flats and told a man, 82, he was the window cleaner and asked for payment. The elderly man had no money so the offender left empty handed.

He then went into another flat while an 83-year-old woman was on the phone. He reached over her and took cash from the cupboard next to her. She grabbed his arm and he dropped a coin before running from the flat.

The woman chased him but he disappeared out of view on Todd Street.

Police have released an image of a man they would like to speak to.

Detective Constable Nick Price said: "Thankfully no one was hurt but the offender clearly went into the black of flats with the intention of getting cash from vulnerable residents living there.

"We would urge anyone with information or who recognises the man in the image to contact police.

"I would also advise residents to remain vigilant and keep doors locked. If someone calls at your home without an appointment ask for ID and if still unsure ask them to come back at a time when you can have a friend or relative with you."

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 8577/8701 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
