Can you help the family of Fusilier Lee Rigby?

Date published: 18 July 2014

Lorna Taylor, a friend of Lyn Rigby and a campaigner behind a Lee Rigby memorial in Woolwich, is asking people to come together to help raise money to send the Rigby family on a well deserved holiday.

Lorna, whose son was in the Fusiliers with Lee, is hoping to raise around £10,000 to give to the family and to Lee’s son Jack.

She said: “It says on the fundraising page that I want to raise £3,000 but I would really like to raise £10,000. If you think about it £3,000 isn’t a lot to send a family of four on holiday and to give money to Jack so I want to raise as much as possible for them.”

Lorna believes that it is time that the Rigby family were given the time and space to heal following Lee’s tragic death.

She added: “I think they need to get away from the press and the internet for a while and really start to grieve. Lee’s death is still raw in everyone’s hearts and I think we should all come together to show the family that we are standing by them.”

Lorna has set herself and fellow fundraisers 30 days to raise the total and is asking people to give as much or as little as possible.

She added: “On my memorial page there are 13,000 members. If each of them donates just £1 we would reach a brilliant amount of money. Even if people can donate just 50p then that would help a huge amount.”

Lorna worries for Lyn and understands that the grieving process will take time.

She added: “I just think sometimes it can be too much for her. Not only was her son killed in a horrific way but the men who did it are appealing their sentences and the family will have to potentially go and sit through the appeal. I think they just need to get away from it all now and start remembering all of the good memories of Lee.”

Even though Lorna would like to send the family on holiday, she would be happy for them to use the money in any way they see fit.

“Because Lyn isn’t the registered next of kin with the army, she doesn’t get any money or help so when the family go to London for things or travel to memorials and events, they have to fund it, so money could help with that. I just want to show the family that we as a country support them,” said Lorna.
