Ken Dodd signs new set of wellies for Jimmy Cricket

Date published: 25 July 2014

Rochdale’s favourite comedian, Jimmy Cricket, has seen an ending to what became known as ‘Welly gate’.

Jimmy hit the national headlines last year when a pair of his infamous wellies got stolen outside his home. This particular set made of concrete was even more special. This is because they were a gift from the one and only Ken Dodd to mark the occasion of Jimmy’s 50th birthday. Ken had even added a personal message and his signature in celebration of Jimmy arriving at his landmark birthday.

This act of theft held a double frustration for Jimmy, as the item itself had a massive sentimental value as well as a monetary worth.

Although this set of wellies remain absent, Jimmy recently managed to source a replacement pair. Jimmy then got them across to a venue in Yorkshire where Ken Dodd was about to make another one of his memorable and unique stage performances. Before entering the fray, Ken took the time to sign this replacement set. They will now once more take pride of place in Jimmy’s home.

Jimmy added: “When I’m performing around the UK, members of the audience still approach me and ask whether I have found the stolen wellies or not. This was certainly the case when I stayed last year in Hunstanton whilst featuring in the Princess Theatre’s summer show.

“So I am sure I will be asked again over the coming months and during my imminent visit to the resort of Hunstanton next month. But I will be glad to report there is a happy ending to the ‘welly gate’ saga and that my good friend, Ken Dodd, has been able to help out again.

“And there’s more; It goes to show that sometimes all’s well that ends well!”
