Smithy Bridge level crossing failure

Date published: 14 August 2014

The Smithy Bridge level crossing failed again on Tuesday (12 August) causing traffic tailbacks and calls for the old manned system to be reinstated.

It is understood that the barriers were stuck in the downward position and cars had to turn around. Some drivers stated that it took them over an hour to complete what would have been a 10-15 minute journey.

This latest failure has seen residents in the area ask for the old system used at the crossing to be reinstated - the manned system that was previously used to operate the barriers was replaced in January.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: “Smithy Bridge level crossing failed just after 15.15pm on Tuesday resulting in, for safety reasons, the barriers remaining in the down position until the issue was resolved.

“Engineers were on site as quickly as possible and after fixing the fault the crossing reopened at 19.10pm. Trains continued to run through the area but went through the crossing at a reduced speed until it was working correctly.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
