Rochdale clean up volunteer from... Luton!

Date published: 12 September 2014

Marney Malik from Luton regularly visits her relatives in Rochdale and has committed herself to join the members of the Rochdale Environmental Action Group in their campaign of improving environment in the Borough of Rochdale.

She said: “I am so motivated by the work of REAG; I plan my visits to Rochdale during the weekend so that I can join the team on Saturdays.”

Marney has been part of the REAG clean up three times.

REAG cleaned Mere Street, Devon Street, Mosque Car Park and William Street and other members cleaned Castlemere Street, Milkstone Road and adjoining Streets.
Next week, members of the REAG will go round to the hotspots with officers of the Environment Management to show them those places which require immediate action. They hope it will improve the environment in the area.

Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE , Secretary of REAG extended special thanks to Marney Malik from Luton, Ikah from Malaysia , Bill and youths from Manchester, Susan from Shaw for their valuable time and contribution to the Borough of Rochdale.

While thanking them, he said: “I would like to emphasise the fact that it is the collected social responsibility of the residents, businesses and organisations of the Borough of Rochdale, to keep the area around their properties clean and tidy. If they can plant flowers, it will make it even more beautiful.”

He said: “For more than three years we have been educating the local community about the importance of keeping our environment clean. In some cases, people feel that we’ll come and clean the area anyway; therefore, they throw more litter and rubbish.

“Particularly on Friday evening, customers from outside come to this area, enjoy food and throw papers, trays, and cans on the roads or footpath.

“We strongly feel there should be strict enforcement of the Environment and Litter Act. We hope that the Environment Management of the Rochdale Council will take appropriate action in this respect.”
