The Algiers Stompers

Date published: 12 June 2008

The new venue for Jazz on a Sunday at the Kingsway Hotel is proving very popular and The Algiers Stompers attracted a good crowd on one of the coldest nights so far.

Led by the Geordie ebullient legend Brian Carrick, equally adept on clarinet and tenor sax, the band perpetuates the music of the Kid Thomas New Orleans Band of the seventies. On trumpet, Peter Wright took the place of the absent Derek Winters whilst Richard Speight depped on banjo for the indisposed Malcolm Hurrell.

The Kid Thomas Band played for the fans rather than to the fans. They generated happiness which led to a full dance floor on every occasion.

The Stompers front line was completed by trombonist Chas Hudson, and big on sound, the tiny Bill Cole was often hidden behind his double bass. The band's driving joyous sound was completed by the quirky Gabriele Gad on piano and Erik Schelander's background drumming.

Popular numbers, quality performances with the powerful presence of Brian Carrick entrancing the afficianados with his brilliant interpretations and arrangements mixed with cameo solos and driving rhythm. Great Evening!
