Tuxedo Jazz Band

Date published: 12 June 2008

A festive visit from the Wirral by the Tuxedo Jazz Band brought a musical interlude to the seasons's celebrations. Although a first visit to "Jazz on a Sunday" trombonist Derek Galloway, drummer Bob Jones and Malcolm Horne on banjo had played at the club in other bands.

Led by reeds player Gerry Owens accompanied on the front line by Hughie Gerrard on trumpet there varied programme includes a selection of marches which are not always in the repertoire of other jazz outfits!

Powerful renditions of 'Salutation March', 'Bugle Boy March' and 'Moose March' set the pattern of a quality performance. Galloway led the vocals in his "Temperance Seven" style with 'Pennies From Heaven' and Owens and Galloway blended well with their duo on clarinet and trombone in 'The Old Rugged Cross' - always a Sunday favourite!

John Muskett on bass completed a rhythm section which nicely complemented a strong front line with excellent arrangements of 'Old Grey Donnet' and 'Jumping The Line'. Yet another great evening at the Kingsway!
