Police seeking two further men in connection with police officer dragged by car

Date published: 31 October 2014

Speaking to Rochdale Online, Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Aston said: “Three men have been arrested. Two are still outstanding. They know who they are, we would like them to come forward.”

Detective Chief Inspector Aston added: “Items were also recovered from the car which could be identified as weapons.”

The incident is believed to have started at the bonfire at Cronkeyshaw Common and it is understood that a scuffle took place between two groups of youths. The incident then spilled on to Yorkshire Street where police were called to just before 9pm.

The police officer, who is a beat officer from Rochdale with 10 years service, approached a car with five Asian males in. She wanted to speak to them about the incident. The door of the car was open but as the officer leaned in to try and speak to the occupants, the car drove off forcing the officer to cling onto a head rest. The officer was also repeatedly punched in the face.

“She is now being treated in hospital and is undergoing assessment. She is recovering and is in shock. We feel the same way that we would do if this was a member of the public that was injured, we feel for the officer,” added Detective Chief Inspector Aston.

For members of the public who may be feeling on edge after the attack, the police are urging the public that there is nothing to be afraid of and are describing the incident as an “isolated incident.”

“We believe this is an isolated incident that started at the bonfire. The public have no need to be afraid or on edge,” added Detective Chief Inspector Aston.

Police are still appealing to witness regarding the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
