Crescent Hotel receives major facelift

Date published: 15 December 2014

The former Crescent Hotel on Drake Street has received a major facelift from Rochdale Council and now looks unrecognisable.

The majority of the repair work to the building has been completed with the outside receiving a fresh lick of paint.

Whilst working on the property, the council found Japanese Knotweed at the rear of the building and will be working to remove that when possible. This will have to take place in the spring when the knotweed starts to grow again.

Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE, who has campaigned for the building to be transformed, said: “I think it looks a lot better now. When you are entering the town this is one of the first buildings that you see and before now, it was an eyesore but now I think its looks so much better. I am so grateful to the local authority, the owners and anyone else who has helped transform the building.”

The building has been unoccupied for several years and fell into disrepair.

Rochdale Council used its powers to carry out the improvements and to charge the owners.
