Inspector Michelle Hughes

Priorities this week continue to be around reducing burglaries and ensuring we continue to support victims of domestic violence.

Burglaries

We have had five burglaries reported this week throughout Rochdale North.

Breakdown of burglaries per beat:

Central – 0
Bamford – 1
Norden - 0
Spotland and Falinge -1
Healey - 2
Milkstone and Deeplish -1
Town Centre - 0

We continue to give this our utmost attention. Our officers continue to carry out daily checks on suspects and giving attention to the hotspot areas, and we continue to target offenders and focusing on ways to prevent offences taking place. Recently we have seen an increase in hook and cane style burglaries across the area in the last few weeks. Read the tips below and lower your chance of being a victim of crime.

Robbery on Milkstone Road

The investigation into the robbery that occurred on Milkstone Road continues. The robbery happened at about 12:30pm on Thursday 22 January. Thankfully no one was physically injured and the use of a smokescreen like anti-theft device prevented the offenders escaping with a large amount of valuable property.

We know there were people in the area around the time of the incident and indeed they may have witnessed something that could aid the investigation.

Clearly everyone inside the store is suffering from severe shock and it has had a significant impact on them. We need the support of local communities to help bring those who break the law to justice. If you saw what happened and would like to speak to one of our officers in confidence please call Rochdale North Team on 0161 856 9961. Alternatively you can ring the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111

A 20-year-old male was arrested on 21 January 2015 on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance with intent to supply. He has been bailed to re-attend custody at a later date, pending further enquiries.

Crime Prevention

Don’t be a victim of a hook and cane burglary.

The method the thieves are using involves a cane, stick or extended metal bar being placed through the letterbox of homes to hook keys in hallways.

This is a crime which can be easily prevented and if keys cannot be reached through the door cars will not be stolen.

The cars stolen in this way do tend to be the newer cars and the high-performance cars, those which are well-protected and can be taken more easily with the keys rather than breaking in.

Residents are urged to be extra vigilant and ensure keys and valuables, like purses, wallets and mobile phones are not left where they can be seen or stolen either through letter boxes or through glass doors or windows.

Residents could also consider fitting a house alarm as a thief is unlikely to spend long looking for car keys, with an alarm system ringing.

By simply putting keys and valuables out of sight, could prevent you becoming a victim of a hook and cane burglary.
