Warning: a very fishy offer

Date published: 05 March 2015

People are being warned not to fall victim to high pressure doorstep salesmen who have been targeting homes in Rochdale after a pensioner in the Smallbridge area was pressured into buying hundreds of pounds worth of frozen fish.

The elderly person was told it would cost £26 but payment was taken using an electronic card reader for £260.

As well as the overpayment, the resident was also concerned about how the fish had been stored and whether or not it is safe to eat.

Rochdale Trading Standards advice is:

  • If you don’t want uninvited doorstep callers place a sticker in your window/door – contact Trading Standards who will provide you with one.
  • If payment is requested by a debit/credit card, always check the amount input is correct before putting in your PIN. Never disclose your personal identification number (PIN) or let anyone persuade you to hand over your bank card or go to the bank to withdraw cash for a payment.
  • If you feel intimidated, ask the salesperson to leave and close the door. If they refuse, call the police.
  • If you suspect anything suspicious call the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06.
