Middleton Scouts & Guide Associations St George's Parade on Sunday (26 April) started with a service at St Leonard’s, Middleton Parish Church, which included the opportunity for members to reaffirm the Scout or Guide promise.

Following the service there was a procession from the church, along Durnford Street, Milton Street, Market Street and East Way to Middleton Gardens.

The procession was led by guides and scouts - carrying the Union Flag, St George’s Flag, Guide Standard, District Explorer Flag, District Scout Flag - and the Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service Pipe Band.

Liz McInnes, the Labour Party parliamentary candidate for Heywood & Middleton, said: “A real pleasure to attend St George's Day celebrations at St Leonard's Church followed by a parade in lovely sunshine.”

  • 2nd Central Rainbows, Brownies and Guides, Thornham
  • 8th Beavers and Cubs, St Thomas More
  • 1st Central Rainbows, Brownies and Guides, Parish
  • 1st Beavers and Cubs, Parish
  • 1st Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, Broadshaw
  • 1st South East Rainbows, Brownies and Guides, St Michael’s
  • 2nd South East Rainbow and Brownies, St Michael’s
  • 2nd Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, St Michael’s, Tonge and Kirkway 

Baden-Powell chose Saint George to be the Patron Saint of The Scout Association. He felt that the Saint George of legend set a good example of faith, courage and perseverance for future generations.

St George's Day is celebrated on the 23 April, and most districts hold some form of celebration on the nearest Sunday.
