Getting a taste of college

Date published: 03 July 2015

Hopwood Hall College welcomed its future catering and hospitality students at a special event this week. The day was organised to allow current students and students-to-be, to meet one another and get a ‘taste’ of life at the College before the new academic year starts in September.

The day saw the students take part in a number of delicious cooking classes. In the morning, the new students watched a cookery demonstration by current student Damien Thompson, 17, from Rochdale, before having a go themselves. It wasn’t long before the College’s kitchens filled with the smells of homemade strawberry jam which became the tempting filling of freshly made Victoria sponges.

The afternoon had the students in the kitchen again, this time cooking up some tempting treats including chicken stuffed with pepper, basil and cream cheese as well as risotto and Arancini (stuffed rice balls that are coated with breadcrumbs, and fried).

Katie Allen, Hopwood Hall College catering lecturer and work based learning assessor, said: “The day was a huge success. It was a great way of letting our soon-to-be students know the sort of thing they will be learning when they join the College in September and everyone commented on how much fun they had had. They are a very talented bunch of students and we are looking forward to teaching them.”
