Yelloway Coaches celebrated their centenary anniversary today (Saturday 4 July) with a mobile museum outside Rochdale Town Hall.

The mobile museum included seven Yelloway coaches as well as pictures, posters and other memorabilia.

Paul Blackburn, Chairman of the committee that organised the event, said: “It has been fantastic and we have had a wonderful response.”

The event celebrated the centenary of the registration of Holt Brother’s (Rochdale) Ltd in 1915.

Paul added: “We wanted to hold the event because of how big this anniversary is. Yelloway was a name known nationally so we thought it was an important milestone to celebrate.”

As well as the mobile museum, up to 50 former Yelloway employees got together for a reunion.

“A lot of the former employees have said that it has been nice to meet up and discuss old memories from their time with the company, so that has been nice to hear” added Paul.

Deputy Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Ray Dutton was at the event and described the day as “wonderful”.

He said: “It has been a wonderful day and I have to thank the people who have organised it because it has been great.

“I have learnt so much about Rochdale’s history that I didn’t know beforehand. It really has been a wonderful day and people have travelled to come here and that is great to see.”

Councillor Allen Brett is calling for a Yelloway plaque to be installed at Number One Riverside, as that is where the former Yelloway garages were located.

Councillor Dutton added: “Councillor Brett is calling for a Yelloway plaque in Riverside and I think that we should have a dedication service to mark this centenary. Yelloway really helped to spread the name of Rochdale nationally.”

Two vintage corporation buses, one Rochdale, one Bury, were also running from the Town Hall taking visitors on a trip to to Heywood Railway Station and back.
