Photographic competition - work and play in the Borough of Rochdale

Date published: 15 July 2015

The Rochdale Photographic Society has organised a public photo competition to celebrate its 125th anniversary.

The Society says it wants entries that reflect life in Rochdale today, on the subject of 'Work and Play in the Borough of Rochdale' - photos must have been taken within the Borough - submitted as 7" x 5" prints. They can be handed in around the Borough during September.

An event will be held at Touchstones on Saturday 7 November 2015, where it is hoped that the Mayor will award prizes to the competition winners.

The current President of the Society, John Steel, says: "We want to emphasise our long links with the area, and the way photography has been a part of life since our foundation in 1890. Over the next four months you will be hearing more of our plans to celebrate this wonderful Borough."

"We hope that this competition - open only to non-members - will encourage people to tell the story of daily life in Rochdale through what they see around them."

On 7 November 1890 John Albert Bright M.P. called a meeting at Duckworth's Hotel and together with several other noted gentlemen formed the Rochdale Photographic Society.

It has been going strongly ever since and helped beginners and advanced photographers to improve their work.

The Society meets on Wednesday evenings throughout the year at the Unitarian Church in Clover Street OL12 6TP at 7:45pm and visitors are welcome.
