Campaign to uncover and preserve the wooden setts in King Street

Date published: 09 September 2015

Rochdale Artists have started a campaign to uncover and preserve the wooden setts in King Street, Rochdale town centre.

They say: “We believe they were put down because there used to be a small hospital on King Street and they didn't want to disturb the patients with the noise of horse and carriages on stone cobbles, how thoughtful of them.

“King Street is a small dead end and right next to the river opening,

“Surely it wouldn't cost much to remove the tarmac and restore the cobbles to their former glory ready for the river opening completion.

“We think it is a fairly unique piece of road and could easily be blocked off as it is a dead end.”

Mark Robinson, Head of Planning at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “There are currently no plans to uncover the wooden cobbles [sic] on King Street. The council is looking at making further improvements to the public realm in Rochdale town centre in the future, but no decisions have been made about what this scheme will involve.”
