REAG take council to task

Date published: 12 October 2015

Members of the Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG) cleaned the corner of the car park of the NHS Nye Bevan near Rochdale metro and railway station.

They reported it to the council some time ago but nothing happened so they decided to clean it.

They also cleaned Ann Street, Dowling Street and the area around the Nye Bevan Health Centre Saturday 10 October.

Members of REAG spoke to the residents, businesses and members of the community emphasising the importance of improving the environment of the Milkstone & Deeplish Area.

The business community is asking for larger bins on Milkstone Road and Tweedale Street.
They say, in order to improve the environment of the Milkstone and Deeplish area, the council need to provide larger bins, the existing ones are covered, small and cannot cope with the amount of litter and rubbish coming from the takeaways, fish and chip shops and restaurants, there is immediate need to have larger bins in the area.

Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE, secretary of REAG, said: "Milkstone and Deeplish area is the gateway to Rochdale.

“Thousands of commuters use the railway and the tram every day.

“The amount of litter and smaller bins full of litter is not a good impression.

“I hope the council will take immediate action in this respect and provide large bins.

“The council should also have an agreement /pledge with the shop keepers, as part of the planning application, to keep the area of their businesses clean otherwise the customers will continue to throw litter.

“Members of REAG would like to see the enforcement of the environmental laws to reduce litter and rubbish on our streets."
