The Deputy Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, Simon Byrne, is preparing to take on a new role with the Metropolitan Police.

Mr Byrne fought of stiff competition to secure the Assistant Commissioner post with the London force.

He joined GMP in February 2009 from Merseyside Police where he was Assistant Chief Constable. In his two and half years with GMP, Mr Byrne has been pivotal in improving Force performance and driving down crime across Greater Manchester.

Councillor Paul Murphy, Chairman of the Greater Manchester Police Authority, said: “During his time with GMP, Simon Byrne has made significant contribution to the Force and has played a vital, leading role in fighting crime and making the communities of Greater Manchester better places to live and work.

“On behalf of the Police Authority, I would like to wish him every success. He has proved himself to be an excellent officer and an integral part of the GMP team and we’re sorry to lose him. There’s no doubt that he will be a real asset to the Metropolitan Police and will have a positive impact on the communities he will serve.”

Chief Constable Peter Fahy, added: “Simon Byrne has made an outstanding contribution to the performance improvements seen in GMP and implemented a number of major changes which are benefitting local people. I will be sorry to see him go but given his leadership qualities I am not surprised that he has achieved this significant promotion."

Russell Bernstein, Executive Director of GMPA, concluded: “Discussions are now underway with regards to the date of Mr Byrne’s departure from GMP and who will act as Deputy Chief Constable until a permanent replacement is appointed. We will announce these details once they have been finalised.”
