Young Dale fan becomes Metrolink mascot

Date published: 04 February 2014

Seven-year-old Lewis Wright from Rochdale, was given the once in a lifetime chance to become the Metrolink Mascot at Saturday’s FA Cup match against Sheffield Wednesday.

The youngster, who attends Meanwood Primary School in Rochdale, was selected from hundreds of children for the exciting role, as part of Metrolink’s partnership with the Manchester County FA.

Lewis was given the opportunity to meet and greet the Rochdale players, as well as lead them out on to the pitch at Rochdale FC stadium.

A keen fan of the team, Lewis said: “I can't believe I won, I’ve always dreamed of meeting the players in the tunnel and walking on to the pitch. I love watching Rochdale AFC, I go to every home game with my family, and they really are the best team.”

His mother Andrea said: “My proudest moment was seeing Lewis walking out onto the pitch from the tunnel with the players – you could see the excitement on his face.

“Lewis was also given the opportunity to have a kick about on the pitch with the youth team while the players were warming up. This is something he’s always wanted to do −Lewis hasn’t stopped telling his friends about the whole day since.

Following the match, Lewis said: “It was by far the best day of my life, especially getting all the players autographs and posing in photographs with them. What a day to remember, thank you Metrolink.”

Peter Cushing, Transport for Greater Manchester’s Metrolink Director, said: “We are thrilled Lewis enjoyed his mascot appearance on Saturday.

“Metrolink is the official travel partner of the Manchester County FA, and with the opening of the new Rochdale Town Centre stop due in spring, it will soon be even easier for Rochdale AFC supporters to travel to and from matches.”
