Husnain Ali takes out Connor Smith by unanimous decision

Date published: 02 February 2016

Husnain Ali beat Connor Smith of Sale West ABC in a support bout for the Junior Northwest Regonal semi-finals on Friday 29 January.

The contest was the last of a long evening and Ali, a senior boxer at Hamer, Rochdale, slowly came out looking to take the fight to his slightly nervous looking opponent who was happy to stand out of range and keep the contest at distance.

Smith continued with not wanting to engage and Ali began to bully his opponent onto the ropes with punishing body shots and uppercuts that continually shot Smith's chin up into the air.

Ali's relentless style continued to frustrate Smith and he struggled to cope throughout the round.

The Hamer corner had seen that Smith dropped his left hand whenever he threw his jab so Ali was instructed to go to the body with a lead left hook, then come up with his rear right-handed hook to the jaw.

From the sound of the bell Ali followed instructions to the letter and landed a scintillating punch that clearly had Smith in distress.

Ali was in charge as he continued to follow his instructions to perfection and all the disheartened Sale West boxer could do was lower his head and grab hold.

By the third and last round both boxers where very tired and as they clashed in the middle of the ring Smith tried to unload some solid shots but it quickly became clear that the Sale West boxer didn't want to trade with Ali and he continued to lower his head and hold, leaving the referee to constantly break both boxers apart before the last bell sounded and Husnain's arm was lifted as the winner by unanimous decision.
