James Buckley and Sophie Irving win Under 16s badminton tournament

Date published: 10 February 2016

James Buckley and Sophie Irving were the singles winners at the annual Rochdale Junior Badminton Club Tournament at Falinge Park High School on Saturday 6 February 2016.

Thirty players from Rochdale, Oldham and Bury participated in the tournament, held for girls and boys under the age of 16, and over 100 competitive badminton singles and doubles games were played.

Bob Heaton, head coach, said: “For over 45 years we've provided opportunities for players to compete. To grow talent from such a young age is important. We need to continue to spot and nurture talent to help players work towards achieving their potential.

"I'd personally like to thank the players, coaches, volunteers, parents and families for the smooth running of the tournament, helping to make it possible and such a huge success.

"Players had fun, played their best and demonstrated excellent sportsmanship through the tournament."

One of the parents, Paul Bowyer from Rochdale, said: “Excellent event once again. Well organised, well supported. Congratulations to all players for taking part and thanks to the coaches who give up their time to make it happen.

"Huge congratulations to the winners and all those that took part."
