Local athletes medallists at Greater Manchester Summer School Games

Schools from the borough were medallists as close to 2,000 school pupils took part in the 2016 Greater Manchester’s Summer School Games.

A number of world class facilities were utilised for the games, including the Manchester Tennis Centre and National Basketball Performance Centre where competitions took place.

There were competitions taking place in athletics, baseball/softball, dodgeball, football, goalball, golf, netball, new age kurling, rounders, rugby union, basketball and tennis.

Local medallists:

  • Gold 
    Holy Family RC and CE College - Goalball Year 7/8/9 Disability 
  • Silver 
    Hollingworth Academy - Dodgeball Year 7/8 Girls
    Rochdale Borough - KS2 Tri Golf (Disability) 
  • Bronze 
    St James C of E Wardle Primary School - Golf Year 3/4 Tri Golf

Matt Stocks, Development Manager (Children & Young People) at GreaterSport, and part of the organising committee for the games, commented: “Seeing so much enthusiasm towards sport from schools across the county was great.

"The Greater Manchester School Games is a memorable opportunity for young people to get involved in sport and increase their confidence. I believe this is just the start of many young athlete’s sporting journey. The standard of talent was high and there effort from all the volunteers and young leaders was great to see.”
