Spencer Allen impressive in Pennine Cricket League victory over Greater Manchester League

Date published: 12 July 2016

An impressive performance by Spencer Allen helped the Pennine Cricket League U12s to victory over the Greater Manchester League U12s.

The Greater Manchester League won the toss and elected to field.

Following defeat to the Liverpool competition last week, the Pennine team made a tentative start to their innings. Jake Barlow fell early edging to the wicket keeper, with the score on just three.

Daniel Stock joined Ben Brierley and the boys made steady progress against some good bowling. The pair put on 40 before Breirley fell leg before wicket for 14 to the last ball before rain interrupted play.

Thomas Mayor joined Stock in what would be a decisive partnership, Stock 38 and Mayor 29 increased the rate taking the score to 80 before Stock also went lbw.

The base was set on a day where runs would not come easily and Spencer Allen and Sammi Waheed from Norden scored nine and 11 respectively to take the Pennine League to 131 for seven off their 40 overs.

The Pennine team started their innings well, with Daniel Stock taking a smart stumping off Sammi Waheed to remove Dan Stevens.

More good fielding led to a mix up between the Lancashire pair Evan Williams and Harry Singh and Williams departed for just two leaving the GMCL on 16 for two from the opening 10 overs.

GMCL fought back with Harry Singh and Callum Hunter both hitting some lusty blows before departing to terrific catches - Jake Barlow caught Singh diving forward in the covers while Thomas Mayor held onto a thunder bolt from Hunter at mid off.

The game was in the balance with GMCL on 60 for four, but three wickets from Royton's Jacob Rimmer swung the game hugely in the Pennine League's favour at 83 for eight.

More great work in the field by Ben Brierley saw another run out before Spencer Allen (one for six in six overs) took the final wicket.

The GMCL team finished on 97 all out hence the Pennine League won by 34 runs.

The return fixture is on 24 July.
