Nicola White helps Great Britain win Pool B

Date published: 15 August 2016

Littleborough hockey star Nicola White helped Great Britain’s woman’s team to win Pool B in the Olympic Games with a 2-1 win over the United States on Saturday (13 August).

Midfielder Nicola started the game as a substitute but featured heavily in the victory, despite being shown a green card in the second quarter.

There were no first half goals despite Great Britain having a number of chances, and the United States unexpectedly took the lead in the 38th minute through Michelle Viteese’s shot goal.

However, a spirited Great Britain scored twice in the final ten minutes, Sophie Bray’s 53rd minute penalty corner was quickly followed by Alex Danson’s field goal to hand Nicola and her team mates a vital win.

Topping Pool B handed Great Britain a quarter-final tie against Spain, who finished fourth in Pool A. That match will be played on Monday (15 August) at 10.00pm.

If successful in that encounter, Great Britain will face New Zealand in Wednesday’s semi-final after they defeated rivals Australia 4-2 in their quarter-final tie on Monday.
