Mayfield preview

Date published: 08 September 2016

Mayfield go into the NCL premier division game against Wath Brow on Saturday knowing that they still have an outside chance of finishing in second place.

For that to happen they have to win all three remaining games and hope other results go their way.

Winning Saturday’s game is what they must concentrate on and that’s all they have been working on in training this week.

Calland and Butterworth will welcome several players back into the squad with Dec and Lewis Sheridan, Jack Rush, Simon Moore, Liam Whalley, Callum Marriot, Gaz Ellison and Callum Ogden all being back in contention for places, although Rob Kershaw and Jack Sampson are ruled out through injury.

Last week’s 0 – 14 loss was the first time in a long while that a Mayfield side has been held scoreless, but the re-introduction of these returning players will almost guarantee that that doesn’t happen again this week.

The Cumbrian visitors also are on a must win mission with every game at this stage of the run in being like a cup final. They went down last week in a high scoring thriller at home to in form St Patrick's and are one place and two points above Mayfield so this game sees two teams who are out to win at all costs.

The second half of the season has seen Mayfield rely heavily on youth and they have not let themselves or the club down but when it comes to winning important games you invariably need the right balance of experience in the mix to guide the younger players around the park.

Saturday’s selection should see that balance restored. The side know that on their day they are good enough to go head to head with the best in the league and all being well today will be that day. Match sponsors are Yeardley’s Cold Storage and Dave Tully and Son Vehicle Repairs.

The NWML side is also in action with a short trip to face Bury Broncos.

Broncos are the surprise package this season and are in second spot pushing for promotion.

Dave Harmer's side will be looking to upset the apple cart as they look to improve their league standing with a much needed two points.

The side should benefit from the returning senior squad players and Harmer is looking to field a strong side for the clash.
