Mayfield preview

Date published: 22 September 2016

Mayfield go into the last game of the season proper on Saturday knowing they still need to win to be assured of fourth place and the home tie they want in the play-offs.

A win against Leigh Miners would mean at least a fourth place finish, although if West Hull were to falter at home to relegated Lock Lane that would mean Mayfield leap-frogging them into third.

If Wath Brow win at Kells and Mayfield lose that would see them drop a spot to fifth and result in an away game, probably at West Hull.

There will be a major selection headache for coaches Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth with players returning from injury and holiday while the youngsters who have deputised have performed magnificently.

In last week's win at St Pats, seven teenagers played starring roles in a fantastic game of rugby league. For such a young side to play and win at this level at a place like St Pats against a big physical side is almost unheard of. Star of the show for the youth at St Pats was Zac Hartley who weighed in with a try and an impressive seven conversions for an 18 point haul.
