Rugby League: Rochdale Mayfield 50 - 16 Wath Brow Hornets

Date published: 06 October 2016

Mayfield powered through this knock out game into round two of the Premier division play-offs, with a convincing win over visitors Wath Brow.

The Cambrians finished just one place below Mayfield in the league, but Mayfield put them to the sword scoring eight tries and seven7 goals in a thrilling game at Mayfield Rugby Club.

The game started tough with both sides trading sets of possession.

Rhys Carruth forced his opposite number in touch on half way. From the resultant scrum Lewis Sheridan rounded his marker to score a Zac Hartley converted try.

Mayfield worked hard to defend their line against probing attack, but Lee Registe knocked on at the play the ball. Wath Brow ran hard, and passed wide on the last, looking certain to score in the corner, but Rhys Carruth had other ideas and he scooped up the offload and raced 90 metres up the field to score another long range try for his collection. Zac Hartley converted.

Callum Marriott made no mistake as he stretched over to score wide on the right. The conversion was missed.

Wath Brow realised they needed to do something different to stop the rot, and they stepped up their wrestle in the tackle.

Mayfield responded with some slack play in their own half, and in the last 10 minutes of the half, Wath scored two tries following Mayfield errors.

The first half scoring was finished with a penalty goal to Wath after a dubious shoulder charge call.

Aidan Gleeson and Nick Hargreaves re-entered the fray, and immediately made an impact, driving to the line where Callum Marriott took over and offloaded to Zac Hartley who scored a try he converted himself.

With a quarter of the match left, it was now a matter of how many Mayfield would score.

Wath Brow got a four pointer and Zac Hartley slotted over a penalty before Mayfield cut loose.
