Rochdale Mayfield have their first game of 2017 on Saturday afternoon as they entertain Oldham based Holinwood in the first round of the Oldham Standard Cup.

Hollinwood are in the second division of the Pennine League where they are not enjoying the best of seasons so far with only one win from eleven starts.

Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth will look to this game as a test for the younger players in the reckoning for first team places as they come through from last seasons all conquering U18s.

There will probably be places for a few of these lads in the side with Calland showing last year that he has no fear of playing the youngsters against the more experienced open age players, going by the old adage 'if you’re good enough you’re old enough'.

The game also gives the coaches the chance to look at players in readiness for next week’s potentially tricky trip to the University of Hull for the first round of the Labrokes Challenge Cup.
