Mayfield Preview

Date published: 16 February 2017

Rochdale Mayfield are in action on Saturday afternoon in the I Pro cup as they face the toughest of opposition in Barrow Raiders.

The I Pro cup was initially the league one cup for the professional sides but Canadian side the Toronto Wolfpack has declined to be involved which lead to Mayfield being invited in their place.

This is a massive challenge for the local amateur side as Barrow are one of the tips for the top this season. With a rich history dating back 130 years Barrow have made five appearances at Wembley in challenge cup finals; it’s not often that an amateur side can play hosts to such opposition and the visitors will be shown the utmost respect.

As if it was needed this tie was given added spice when the Challenge Cup round three draw was made this week and the teams were again paired together, this time at the Barrow.

Mayfield coaches Calland and Butterworth know what they are up against and are massive underdogs in this game, but they are confident their players will rise to the challenge. The inclusion of youth in the side over the last season has seen the Mayfield side put in some great performances and has led to some teams underestimating the side.

Last week’s side contained eight teenagers and all performed outstandingly to come back from Kells with a victory.

Saturday’s game will be a bit different but the youngsters are no respecters of reputation and they will play the only way they know how, to win.

Lewis and Dec Sheridan, along with players like Zac Baker, Paul Brearley and Callum Marriot, will be relishing the opportunity to show their skills at this level. There is also the speed of players like Lee Registe and Matty Ashton, which will always cause problems for teams, so a cracking game is promised for the local rugby league fan.

As with all games against professional opposition the pro side has an input into the gate prices as they obviously have wages to pay, so admission will be £10 adults £5 concessions and at Mayfield under 16s are free.

A good crowd is expected at the Mayfield Sports centre so there will be overspill parking at Castleton Community Centre.
