Rugby League: Mayfield 28 – 0 Leigh East

Date published: 10 April 2017

Despite put themselves under pressure after thirty seconds, giving away a penalty and possession in a game billed as the game of the day in the NWML second division, Mayfield dominated their highly-regarded opposition in the second half to take the spoils.

Within ten minutes Mayfield had dropped a bomb, knocked on their own line and then failed to gather another high kick. It was only thanks to a rock-solid defence that the visitors didn’t get on the score sheet.

It took twenty minutes before Mayfield offered any real threat in the Leigh twenty and the first time they did Corey Newsham managed to conjure a try from nothing in the corner.

The second half saw Mayfield totally dominate and Tom Fitz’s two tries, both converted from the touchline by Cole Connolly saw off any real challenge that Leigh had to offer.

Mayfield are now preparing for the Good Friday Oldham Standard cup final against St Anne's at Oldham rugby union's ground.

Mayfield lost out unexpectedly last year to Saddleworth after having coach Matt Calland dismissed early in the game.

This year should see a different Mayfield side who will turn out full of confidence and be looking to take the trophy back to the Mayfield clubhouse and enjoy a good start to the Bank Holiday.
