Rugby League: John Cookson suffers heart attack

Date published: 16 April 2017

John Cookson, former Rochdale Hornets fan favourite, suffered a heart attack on Friday after playing for his current club, North Wales Crusaders against Toronto Wolfpack.

It is understood John is in a stable condition and will remain in hospital for the next few days.

A spokesman for Rochdale Hornets said: "The thoughts of everyone at Rochdale Hornets are with John and his family at this difficult time and wish him a full and speedy recovery."

John played for Hornets between 2011 and 2016 and was the first of the 'new Hornets' to reach 100 appearances for the club. He was also an integral member of the squad in Hornets promotion winning 2013 campaign, scoring in the Grand Final against rivals Oldham.

He signed for North Wales in the 2017 pre season.
