Rochdale Hornets’ Wheelchair RL team competed in their first ever competitive league match on Saturday when they faced Mersey Storm.

It was a promising debut as though they were soundly beaten, they registered 20 points against their experienced opponents, who boasted no fewer than three internationals.

Coach Michael Ratu was delighted with the afternoon, he said: "We have come a long way since day one and it was a proud moment for the team to compete in their first ever league match on Saturday.

“It was a promising debut but ultimately our thin squad lacked experience, but that is something we will gain over time as we compete in this division.

“It’s definitely something to build on, the fixtures are coming thick and fast now so we want to see a some big turnouts at Kingsway High School supporting the team.

“The game was played in great spirits and we want to thank our opponents Mersey Storm for the contest.”

Storm assistant coach Ste Lever was full of praise for the Hornets side, and has extended the club’s best wishes for the season, he said: “Although the score was 92-20 I’d like to congratulation our opponents as they played really well and in good spirit throughout the entire game.

“We hope that the Hornets are not disheartened by the result, we had three players who have played at international level and you will become competitive after a season or two in the division.

“If we can help the club in any way then please don’t hesitate to contact us.

“Personally I thought it was a great game, well done to everyone involved.”

For any existing players or those looking to get involved, please be aware that from Saturday 13 May training sessions will take place on Saturdays at Kingsway High School from 10.30am until midday.
