Cricket: Pennine Cricket League report for Saturday 20 May

Date published: 24 May 2017

Premiership

The weather for the first time this season made serious inroads into the league programme with only two games starting in the Premiership, and both these were 20 over games.

There were plenty of runs at Heyside who entertained Rochdale. The small ground allowing for a lot of sixes to be hit. Rochdale amassed a huge 247 for 5 with professional Henry Cooper making the most of the opportunity. He scored 109 with exactly one hundred of those coming in boundaries (seven fours and twelve sixes). Ben Chapman also made 62. For the home side Declan Wilkinson hit 67 not out in their total of 159 for 8.

Austerlands moved off the bottom of the table by winning at home to Saddleworth who replaced them in last place. Austerlands made 142 for 8 and in reply Saddleworth only scored 79 for 8.

Championship

Only one game got under way in this division, that at Moorside who entertained Hollinwood.
Moorside batted first and scored 170 for 5 then restricted the visitors to 131 for 7.

LCB. K.O. Cup Round One

The league had mixed fortunes in this competition, with five of our eight qualifiers making it through to round two.

Crompton, Littleborough, Norden, Rochdale and Walsden being successful.

Probably the best performance coming from Walsden who recorded an excellent nine wicket victory after making the long trip to Barrow in Furness. Josh Gale enjoyed his day taking 5 for 38 when Barrow batted, and then scored 93 not out as Walsden replied with 143 for 1.

Crompton recorded a four wicket win at Penwortham. After restricting the home side to 150 for 8, they replied with 151 for 6 (no individual details to hand).

Littleborough’s professional, Ryan Burl, hit 132 not out at Fleetwood out of their total of 269 for 5. Fleetwood replying with 190 for 9.

Norden at home to Netherfield won by two wickets. After dismissing the Cumbrian visitors for 164, Norden made 168 for 8 (Ashley Gowers 65 not out).

Greenfield visited Haslingden, and Jake Caudwell took 4 for 27 when they put the home side out for 172. Greenfield’s batting was not up to the task and they could only make 98 in reply.

Rochdale accounted quite easily for Walkden at Redbrook. The Bolton League side had no answer to Dale Highton’s 4 for 16 as they could only reach 98 all out. Rochdale made 92 for 2 with Jack Avery scoring 50 not out.

Saddleworth, last season’s Premiership runners up and Wood Cup semi-finalists, are rock bottom in the Premiership at the moment and without a win all season. Visiting Prestwich, they had a catastrophic day with a woeful batting performance, being all out for only 22 in 17.2 overs. Prestwich soon knocked those off without loss, and the match only lasted 23 overs.

Glodwick also fared badly in losing heavily away to Farnworth Social Circle. Mark Whitehead did his best with 5 for 40 as the home side totalled 236 all out, but their batting also collapsed when they were dismissed for 67.
