Rugby League: Mayfield preview

Date published: 07 September 2017

Mayfield entertain West Hull at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday in their final game in the Kingstone Press NCL Premier division.

They will be looking to put last week’s poor performance behind them and get back to winning ways before the play-off elimination games begin in three weeks.

With players returning this week from injury and holidays, coaches Calland and Butterworth are likely to ring the changes in a side that badly underperformed last time out.

Saturday sees Wayne English, Luke Fowden, Liam Whalley and Zac Hartley all in contention for places.

There will have to be an improvement if Mayfield are to take their last two league points from a team with the quality of West Hull.

The last time the teams met, in March West Hull won despite a valiant effort from the Mayfield, so they will come to Rochdale full of confidence and looking for a win that would give them a shot at leap frogging Mayfield at the final hurdle.

There are many different permutations as to what could happen in the run in to the end of the season, with some teams having more games to play than others, but it looks increasingly likely that Mayfield will finish in fourth.

This will still give them a home fixture in the play-offs, against the team finishing in fifth, which looks at the moment like being Kells or Myton.
