Rochdale AFC confirms departure of manager Stockdale

Date published: 18 August 2022

Rochdale AFC has announced that it has parted ways with manager Robbie Stockdale, just five games into the new season.

The club sits bottom of the football league with no points after defeats in the first four league games of the season.

Stockdale became the first team manager in July 2021, joined by assistant manager Jimmy Shan.

Shan has also parted ways with the club.

In a statement on the Rochdale AFC website, the club said: “Rochdale Football Club have today parted company with Robbie Stockdale and Jimmy Shan.

“The board would like to place on record its thanks to Robbie and Jimmy, and wish them every success in the future.”

The club has not made any statement yet as to who will take charge of the team.

Dale travel to Swindon Town on Saturday, and to Hillsborough  to face Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday 23 August in the Carabao Cup.

Former defender Stockdale started his coaching career at Grimbsy Town in 2010 before going on to join Sunderland two years later.

Stockdale spent six years on the staff at Sunderland and was part of the first team set up under the likes of Sam Allardyce. He also had three stints as caretaker manager.

After leaving the Black Cats, he was appointed as Paul Heckingbottom’s assistant at Hibernian in 2019, before reuniting with Allardyce in 2020 when he joined his backroom staff as first team coach at West Bromwich Albion.
